What Does Anxiety Feel Like?

Anxiety affects everyone differently. Some people experience constant worry that is difficult to control, while others notice physical symptoms long before they recognize they are feeling anxious.

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Persistent worry or overthinking
  • Feeling restless or on edge
  • Racing thoughts
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities
  • Avoiding situations that create fear or uncertainty

For many people, anxiety becomes a cycle. The more anxious you feel, the more your mind anticipates future problems, making it difficult to relax even when everything seems fine.

Anxiety Disorders We Treat

Anxiety is not one condition. There are several anxiety disorders, each with its own symptoms and challenges. At Genesis Counseling, our therapists provide treatment for a wide range of anxiety-related concerns.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder involves excessive and persistent worry about multiple areas of life, including work, relationships, health, finances, or everyday responsibilities. Many people with GAD feel as though their minds never stop preparing for the next problem.

Panic Disorder and Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can happen suddenly and often include overwhelming physical symptoms that may feel frightening or even life threatening.

Symptoms may include:

  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Feeling detached from reality
  • Fear of losing control or dying

After experiencing one panic attack, many individuals begin avoiding situations where another attack might occur, creating additional anxiety and limiting daily life.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety involves an intense fear of being judged, criticized, or embarrassed in social or professional settings.

People with social anxiety may avoid conversations, presentations, networking events, dating, or other situations where they feel they are being evaluated by others.

Health Anxiety

Health anxiety involves excessive worry about physical health or developing a serious illness, even when medical evaluations are reassuring.

This may lead to frequent online research, repeated doctor visits, checking behaviors, or ongoing fear that something has been missed.

Specific Phobias

A specific phobia is an intense fear of a particular object or situation that is out of proportion to the actual danger.

Examples include fear of flying, driving, elevators, medical procedures, needles, animals, or heights.

Anxiety, Stress, and Burnout

Chronic stress and burnout often develop alongside anxiety.

When your nervous system remains activated for long periods of time, you may begin feeling emotionally exhausted, mentally overwhelmed, and physically depleted. Over time, this can affect productivity, relationships, sleep, and your overall well-being.

Therapy helps you recognize these patterns before they become overwhelming while teaching healthier ways to respond to stress.

How Anxiety Affects Daily Life

Anxiety can quietly influence nearly every area of your life.

You may find yourself:

  • Overthinking decisions
  • Constantly seeking reassurance
  • Avoiding difficult conversations
  • Procrastinating because tasks feel overwhelming
  • Struggling to relax
  • Feeling mentally exhausted
  • Experiencing relationship difficulties because of worry or irritability

Many people begin believing this level of stress is simply part of who they are. In reality, anxiety is highly treatable with the right support.

How Therapy Helps Treat Anxiety

At Genesis Counseling, therapy focuses on understanding both the thoughts and physical responses that contribute to anxiety.

Depending on your individual needs, treatment may include:

Therapy is collaborative and personalized. Together, you and your therapist will identify your triggers, understand the patterns maintaining anxiety, and develop practical strategies that help you feel more confident managing life’s challenges.

What to Expect During Anxiety Therapy

Your first sessions focus on understanding how anxiety is affecting your daily life, relationships, work, and emotional well-being.

From there, your therapist will help you recognize patterns that contribute to anxiety while introducing practical tools you can begin using immediately.

Over time, many clients notice they are:

  • Less reactive to stress
  • Better able to manage uncertainty
  • Sleeping more consistently
  • Feeling calmer in situations that once felt overwhelming
  • More confident making decisions
  • More engaged in relationships and everyday life

Progress looks different for everyone, but therapy provides a supportive environment where lasting change can happen.

Psychiatry and Medication Management

For some individuals, medication can be an important part of anxiety treatment. Genesis Counseling offers psychiatry and medication management services when appropriate, allowing clients to receive coordinated care under one practice.

Medication can help reduce symptoms while therapy focuses on developing long-term coping strategies that continue to benefit you well beyond treatment.

When to Seek Anxiety Treatment

You may benefit from therapy if:

  • Anxiety feels difficult to control
  • You experience panic attacks
  • Worry is affecting work or relationships
  • Anxiety interferes with sleep
  • You avoid situations because of fear
  • Stress feels constant and overwhelming
  • Physical symptoms of anxiety occur regularly

Seeking help early can prevent anxiety from becoming more disruptive over time.
