School Sports Performance

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Navigate School Sports Performance with Compassionate, Licensed Therapists

Student athletes face unique pressures as they balance academics, competition, training, and personal development. While sports can build confidence, discipline, and resilience, they can also create significant stress, performance anxiety, and pressure to succeed. Mental wellness plays an important role in athletic performance, and developing strong mental skills can help athletes thrive both on and off the field.

You may notice your child or teen struggling with confidence before competitions, becoming overly self-critical after mistakes, losing motivation, or feeling overwhelmed by expectations from coaches, teammates, parents, or themselves. At Genesis Counseling, we provide School Sports Performance therapy that helps student athletes strengthen their mental game, improve confidence, and develop healthy strategies for managing the emotional demands of competitive sports.

We offer therapy in Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Delray Beach, Pompano Beach, and Wellington, as well as virtual therapy throughout Florida.

Signs You May Benefit from School Sports Performance Therapy

Every athlete experiences challenges, but ongoing emotional or mental barriers can begin affecting both athletic performance and overall well-being.

You may notice:

  • Performance anxiety before practices or competitions
  • Fear of making mistakes or letting others down
  • Loss of confidence during competition
  • Difficulty recovering after poor performances
  • Trouble maintaining focus during games or events
  • Excessive self-criticism or perfectionism
  • Stress balancing school, sports, and personal responsibilities
  • Decreased enjoyment or motivation for the sport

Supporting an athlete’s mental health is just as important as supporting their physical development.

When It May Be Time to Seek School Sports Performance Support

Therapy can help athletes at any stage of their athletic journey, whether they are experiencing a temporary setback or ongoing challenges with confidence, anxiety, or performance. Developing mental performance skills early often leads to greater resilience both in competition and in everyday life.

Support may be helpful if:

  • Performance anxiety is interfering with athletic success
  • Confidence has declined after setbacks or injuries
  • Stress is affecting motivation or enjoyment of sports
  • Athletic pressure is impacting emotional well-being or daily functioning

What to Expect from School Sports Performance Therapy

Therapy focuses on strengthening the mental skills that contribute to both athletic success and overall emotional health. Sessions help athletes identify unhelpful thought patterns, improve confidence, manage pressure, and develop strategies that support consistent performance under stress.

Depending on each athlete’s needs, therapy may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness techniques, visualization strategies, goal setting, stress management, and emotional regulation skills. Athletes experiencing excessive worry before competition may also benefit from our Anxiety Treatment services, while those struggling with confidence or negative self-talk may find additional support through our Self-Esteem therapy.

Our therapists work collaboratively with athletes and, when appropriate, parents to create individualized strategies that support success in sports, school, and everyday life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I choose the right therapist?

Finding the right therapist is essential for a successful therapy experience. At Genesis Counseling, our Intake Team carefully matches clients with a therapist based on their presenting concerns, goals, and preferences. Our therapists have diverse specialties, credentials, and training to ensure personalized care for children, teens, adults, couples, and families. We offer therapy at our Coral Springs, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Palm Aire Pompano and Wellington locations, as well as virtual therapy across Florida. With flexible appointment times from 8 AM to 8 PM, we strive to accommodate your schedule.

What should I expect in my first therapy session?

Your first session at Genesis Counseling is an intake appointment, where your therapist will gather important background information to better understand your needs. Whether you’re seeking therapy for yourself, your child, or your family, this session will focus on:

1. Discussing your history and what led you to seek therapy.
2. Identifying your concerns and goals for treatment.
3. Developing a personalized treatment plan to guide your progress.
4. Confirming scheduling and session frequency moving forward.

Our therapists create a safe, supportive environment to help you feel comfortable sharing your experiences.

Does Genesis offer virtual therapy or telehealth sessions?

Yes! Genesis Counseling offers HIPAA-compliant virtual therapy for children, teens, adults, couples, and families across Florida. All of our licensed therapists provide secure and confidential telehealth sessions, allowing you to receive high-quality mental health care from the comfort of your home.

During your intake scheduling, our team will provide all the necessary information on how to access virtual sessions. Telehealth is a convenient option for those with busy schedules, transportation challenges, or a preference for remote care.

Does Genesis provide sliding-scale payment options?

We understand that financial circumstances vary. Select providers within our practice may offer reduced-fee or sliding scale counseling services based on availability and individual circumstances.

If cost is a concern, please contact our office to discuss available options. We are committed to helping clients access the mental health support they need.

Can therapy improve athletic performance?

Is Sports Performance therapy only for athletes with anxiety?

No. Student athletes seek therapy for many reasons, including confidence, motivation, recovery from setbacks, managing pressure, improving focus, and balancing sports with everyday life.

Will therapy focus only on sports?
