School Avoidance

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Navigate School Avoidance with Compassionate, Licensed Therapists

It is normal for children and teens to occasionally resist going to school, but when school refusal becomes frequent or emotionally overwhelming, it may be a sign of a deeper concern. School avoidance is often connected to anxiety, depression, bullying, learning challenges, social difficulties, or significant life changes. Without support, ongoing school avoidance can impact academic success, emotional well-being, and family relationships.

You may notice your child becoming extremely distressed before school, complaining of frequent headaches or stomachaches, refusing to leave the house, or experiencing intense anxiety about attending class. At Genesis Counseling, we provide School Avoidance therapy that helps children and teens identify the underlying causes of school refusal while building the confidence and coping skills needed to successfully return to the classroom.

We offer therapy in Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Delray Beach, Pompano Beach, and Wellington, as well as virtual therapy throughout Florida.

Signs You May Benefit from School Avoidance Therapy

School avoidance often develops gradually and may present differently depending on the child’s age and the underlying cause.

You may notice:

  • Frequent refusal or resistance to attending school
  • Excessive anxiety before or during school days
  • Complaints of headaches, stomachaches, or other physical symptoms before school
  • Frequent visits to the school nurse
  • Difficulty separating from parents or caregivers
  • Emotional outbursts related to attending school
  • Declining academic performance or excessive absences
  • Withdrawal from classmates or school activities

These behaviors are often a sign that a child is struggling emotionally rather than simply choosing not to attend school.

When It May Be Time to Seek School Avoidance Support

Therapy can help when school attendance becomes increasingly difficult or emotional distress begins interfering with your child’s education and daily life. Addressing concerns early often prevents school avoidance from becoming a long-term pattern while helping children rebuild confidence.

Support may be helpful if:

  • Your child frequently refuses to attend school
  • Anxiety or emotional distress increases before school
  • School absences are becoming more frequent
  • School-related stress is affecting your child’s emotional well-being or family life

What to Expect from School Avoidance Support

Therapy begins by identifying the factors contributing to school avoidance while helping children and teens feel understood and supported. Treatment focuses on building emotional resilience, developing healthy coping skills, and gradually increasing confidence around school attendance.

Depending on your child’s needs, therapy may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), anxiety management techniques, emotional regulation strategies, gradual exposure techniques, and parent support. Children experiencing school-related anxiety may also benefit from our Anxiety Treatment services, while those struggling with peer relationships may find additional support through our Social Skills therapy. If emotional regulation challenges are contributing to school avoidance, our Emotional Regulation services may also be beneficial.

Parents play an important role throughout treatment, and therapists work collaboratively with families to develop consistent strategies that support success both at home and at school.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I choose the right therapist?

Finding the right therapist is essential for a successful therapy experience. At Genesis Counseling, our Intake Team carefully matches clients with a therapist based on their presenting concerns, goals, and preferences. Our therapists have diverse specialties, credentials, and training to ensure personalized care for children, teens, adults, couples, and families. We offer therapy at our Coral Springs, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Palm Aire Pompano and Wellington locations, as well as virtual therapy across Florida. With flexible appointment times from 8 AM to 8 PM, we strive to accommodate your schedule.

What should I expect in my first therapy session?

Your first session at Genesis Counseling is an intake appointment, where your therapist will gather important background information to better understand your needs. Whether you’re seeking therapy for yourself, your child, or your family, this session will focus on:

1. Discussing your history and what led you to seek therapy.
2. Identifying your concerns and goals for treatment.
3. Developing a personalized treatment plan to guide your progress.
4. Confirming scheduling and session frequency moving forward.

Our therapists create a safe, supportive environment to help you feel comfortable sharing your experiences.

Does Genesis offer virtual therapy or telehealth sessions?

Yes! Genesis Counseling offers HIPAA-compliant virtual therapy for children, teens, adults, couples, and families across Florida. All of our licensed therapists provide secure and confidential telehealth sessions, allowing you to receive high-quality mental health care from the comfort of your home.

During your intake scheduling, our team will provide all the necessary information on how to access virtual sessions. Telehealth is a convenient option for those with busy schedules, transportation challenges, or a preference for remote care.

Does Genesis provide sliding-scale payment options?

We understand that financial circumstances vary. Select providers within our practice may offer reduced-fee or sliding scale counseling services based on availability and individual circumstances.

If cost is a concern, please contact our office to discuss available options. We are committed to helping clients access the mental health support they need.

Is school avoidance the same as truancy?

No. School avoidance is typically driven by emotional distress such as anxiety, depression, or fear, whereas truancy generally involves intentionally skipping school without significant emotional distress.

Can therapy help my child return to school?

Yes. Therapy helps children understand the underlying causes of school avoidance while developing the coping skills and confidence needed to return to school successfully.

Will parents be involved in treatment?

Yes. Parent involvement is an important part of treatment. Therapists work closely with families to develop strategies that support consistent school attendance and reduce anxiety over time.

Does Genesis Counseling accept insurance?

Genesis Counseling accepts many major insurance plans to help make therapy and mental health services more accessible. Insurance participation may vary by provider and service type, so we encourage you to contact our office to verify coverage before your first appointment. Learn more on our Fees and Insurance page.
